Ithaca College brings to the stage stories from the 17th century right up into the 21st, reaffirming live theatre’s power to delight and inspire, provoke and activate.

Fall 2017 will begin with Angels in America, Part I: Millennium Approaches by Tony Kushner. This contemporary classic, subtitled “a gay fantasia on national themes,” explores love, sex, and religion amidst the AIDS crisis. The play won both the Tony Award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993. 

The Fall musical, Wonderful Town, is a family-friendly, golden-age musical featuring music by Leonard Bernstein. Two sisters from Ohio move to New York City to pursue their artistic dreams. As they attempt to take their bite out of the Big Apple, they are both overwhelmed by, and enamored of, the zany characters they meet there.

One of the plays in Tarell Alvin McCraney’s (“Moonlight”) trilogy, the Brother/Sister Plays, In the Red and Brown Water tells the story of Oya as she enters womanhood. McCraney uses stylized movement and language and the Yoruban iconography of West Africa to depict a contemporary, American, rite of passage.

The spring opera is Cendrillon, composed by Jules Massenet, based on Charles Perrault’s 1698 version of the Cinderella fairy tale. The familiar story of obstacles, cruelty, and magic soars with Massenet’s score. The opera will be sung in French with English supertitles.

This theatrical adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility was written by Ithaca College alumna Kate Hamill. This production brings out the absurdity of 19th-century England’s gossip-driven society as the Dashwood sisters deal with the challenges of finding love amid the constraints of social class.

The season ends with Kander and Ebb’s powerful musical, Cabaret. The unconventional love story of novelist Cliff and singer Sally places them in Berlin as the Nazi party is beginning to gain power. The musical depicts the nobility and fragility of characters who strive to make the best choices for their lives as the world collapses around them.

IC Theatre offers great savings through a variety of season subscription packages. In addition to discounted ticket prices, subscribers have the benefits of guaranteed seats for each of the six main-stage shows, the ability to pick their desired dates, and complimentary ticket exchanges throughout the season.

Ithaca College Theatre student/youth subscription packages start at $30 and include all six shows of the season. Regular admission packages start at $42, and discount packages for senior citizens, alumni, Ithaca College faculty and staff, and Friends of Ithaca College start at $36. Single tickets for all performances will go on sale September 1, 2017 at Ithaca.ticketforce.com. The Dillingham ticket office will open September, 2017.
