Congratulations and Many Thanks to Michael Whelan, Esq.Contributed by Laurie Arliss on 05/08/17 With mixed feelings, the communication studies faculty and students bid farewell to Michael Whelan, who joined the faculty a decade ago after leaving behind a successful law practice in Florida. Michael has now decided to retire from his faculty position leaving behind a successful career as a teacher, mentor, and campus leader. Michael created curricular offerings that combined principles of effective communication with his impressive knowledge of legal procedures. His undergraduate courses were unique and valuable learning experiences not only for communication studies majors aspiring to law school, but also for legal studies majors and minors. Michael established the first IC chapter of the American Mock Trial Association, taking a group of eager students to nationals in the very first year. The group, now well grounded in student enthusiasm and leadership, continues to offer unique co-curricular experiences as student compete in invitational and regional events. One such event, called the Bomber Blitz, is held on our campus. At the urging of former H&S Dean Leslie Lewis, Michael agreed to provide leadership for the school's pre-law program. He created worthwhile and exciting campus events for students interested in law careers. For example, the spring Seminar Series invited IC students to interact with alumni who work in the field including judges, law clerks, in-house counsel, and practicing attorneys. In the coming years, Michael will continue to be part of regional and national dispute resolution panels, and he promises to return to IC for the Bomber Blitz. We wish him all the best in his retirement. Congratulations and Many Thanks to Michael Whelan, Esq. Comment from

taught a number of crucial classes with grace and skill, developed the Mock Trial
Team into an excellent co-curricular program, and, perhaps most importantly,
acted as a committed mentor to dozens of students who have gone on to law
school and the legal profession. He will be sorely missed by everyone in the Comm
Studies and Legal Studies Departments and fondly remembered by many, many
students and alums.
