The Ithaca College chapter of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi is pleased and proud to announce that its 2017 Fellowship nominee, Cailin Harro, has been selected as a Phi Kappa Phi Fellow and will receive an award of $5,000 in support of her graduate studies.

These awards are extremely competitive and to be selected as a Fellow is a distinct honor. Cailin, who graduated in May 2017 with a B.S. in Biology is planning to pursue her DVM degree at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Lansing MI.

Cailin was inducted into Phi Kappa Phi in 2015. Her excellent academic performance and research skills have led to her induction into three other Honor Societies - Oracle (as freshman), Tri Beta (Biology) and Sigma Xi. She is also the recipient of President’s Scholarship (2013-2017) and co-authored a publication with her research mentor, Professor Andrew Smith, in the Journal of Experimental Biology (Fall 2015).

At Ithaca College and surrounding communities, her involvements have included: Co-founder and President of Pre-Veterinary Society at IC, Teaching and Lab Assistant in the Biology department, Peer Tutor in Spanish and Biology, ICU and Surgery volunteer-Blue Pearl Veterinary Partners, Family Friends Veterinary Hospital as well as SPCA of Tompkins County volunteer, among others.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi currently awards fifty-one Fellowships of $5,000 each and six at $15,000 each to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Each of the over 340 active Phi Kappa Phi chapters may select only one candidate from among their local applicants to compete for the Society-wide awards.

Criteria used in the selection process include undergraduate academics, leadership and service both on the campus and in the community, graduate prospects, the student's personal statement, and faculty and other recommendations. 

Ithaca College has been fortunate to have an excellent track record in having fellowships awarded to its nominee. Past Ithaca College winners of the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowships are: Ann Stewart (Music and Mathematics, 1994), Pablo Cora (Music 1995), Teresa Lemery (Physical Therapy, 1997), Dheeraj Verma (Mathematics and Finance, 1999), Bridget Reynolds (Psychology, 2002), Rebecca Hammontree (Music, 2004), Dominic DiOrio (Music, 2006), Joseph Livingston (Chemistry, 2007), Kaitlyn Alcorn (Music, 2010), Kaylee Underkofler (Biochemistry, 2012), and Andrew Becker (Biochemistry, 2014),  Kaitlyn DeHority (Chemistry; Music, 2016)

We are delighted to add Cailin Harro to our chapter's list of recipients featured on the chapter's website and the Phi Kappa Phi display case near Textor 102!

Founded in 1897 at the University of Maine, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Its chapters are on nearly 340 campuses in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines. Each year, approximately 30,000 members are initiated.
