Congratulations to IC student leaders and to Peggy Ryan Williams!Contributed by Michele Lenhart on 06/19/17 Six Ithaca College student leaders were selected from a competitive pool to attend the 2017 National Conference for College Women Student Leaders (NCCWSL) held May 31-June 3 in College Park, MD. The conference took place at the University of Maryland, the U.S. Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, and other DC landmarks. The focus is on women’s leadership issues from a broad range of speakers, including internationally known activists, politicians, journalists, entrepreneurs, and scientists. Travel to this conference was supported by the David and Peggy Williams Endowment for Women's Student Leadership. The conference is sponsored by the American Association of University Women (AAUW). On June 16, AAUW announced the results of the 2017 National Elections, and Peggy Ryan Williams was elected to serve a two year term as the AAUW Board Vice Chair. Congratulations to President Emerita Williams on winning this election, and for the tremendous contributions she has made in the area of educational leadership! The following Ithaca College attendees were among over 900 students selected to attend the NCCWSL from colleges and universities across the United States: • Norah AlJunaidi '19, Speech Language Pathology, VP of Students for Justice in Palestine • Hanna Fuchs ’19, Speech Language Pathology, Resident Assistant • Katja Krieger ’20, Exploratory, Student Leadership Consultant • Theresa Landez ’19, Cello Performance, President of IC HEARD Program • Hannah Sarnie ’20, TVR, Communication, Management, and Design, International Association of Business Communicators • Zoe Vadney ’19, Public and Community Health, Varsity Swimming and Diving Team The students intend to be leaders in their respective fields and plan to use the information that they learned at the conference to enhance their student leadership positions on campus. After the conference, one of the IC students reflected: "As a first timer at the NCCWSL conference I was blown away by the inspiring women I met. I had the opportunity to hear the wise words of the 43rd treasurer of the United States, Rosie Rios, who said that she does not accept failure rather she relentlessly strives for success. The NCCWSL conference has inspired and empowered me to take more risks and pursue leadership roles in all areas of my life." |
