Public Safety Start-of-Year Outreach to Local CommunityContributed by Andrew Kosinuk on 08/29/17 On Thursday, August 31, staff from the Office of Public Safety, along with representatives from the Ithaca Police Department and the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, will visit residences in the off-campus communities on South Hill to promote a safe start to the upcoming school year. Engaging with our off-campus students about celebrating the beginning of the year safely and responsibly provides important support to students who are living away from campus, some for the very first time. It is also a great opportunity to meet non-student residents of the local community and demonstrate that we are taking steps to ensure that Ithaca College students will be respectful and community-oriented neighbors. Each residence will be left with a door hanger that provides important emergency contact information they can use when they need help, as well as reminders of important local laws and ordinances they need to be attentive to as off-campus residents. The door hanger content can also be found at www.ithaca.edu/safety/offcampus. The off-campus visits and door hangers initiative has been used successfully by Public Safety over the past several years and is now practiced at other key times of the year including Cortaca Jug Weekend and late in the spring semester. Individuals, departments, and student organizations interested in participating in future off-campus community engagements such as this can contact Andrew Kosinuk, Crime Prevention and Community Events Liaison for the Office of Public Safety, at 607-274-3353 to get involved! |
