Recent projects pay particular attention to the historical spaces, emotional politics, longings, and labor of women. Drawings and sculptures included in Never Done explore the harrowing process of collaboration; the nervous uncertainty of completion; and the poetics, politics, and possibilities of women’s work. Objects are unhindered from their original ownership and purpose: a broken dish indulgently reconstitutes itself, an unseeded pot of fertilizer spins with the potential of the cosmos, chairs and rugs choreographically test the limits of their singularity, and patterns slip in and out of form with a sense of self-agency. Baldwin’s obsessively rendered objects and patterns refuse to yield as they unravel historical & fictional narratives to question issues of authenticity, community, and inclusivity. Mara Baldwin received her MFA from the California College of the Arts (2010) and her BFA from Wesleyan University (2006). Her work has shown at the Johnson Art Museum (Cornell University), Facebook Manhattan, PLAySPACE, the San Francisco Arts Commission, SOMArts, UC Berkeley, Triple Base Gallery, Root Division, and Capricious/Company Gallery. Her accolades include the Murphy Cadogan Award, an SFMoMA SECA nomination, and residencies with the Vermont Studio Center, Saltonstall Foundation, and the Djerassi Resident Artists Program. Mara is the Director of the Handwerker Gallery at Ithaca College and maintains an active studio practice in Ithaca, NY.
