Tensor Lecture Series: "You can't hear the shape of a drum" (Mon, Oct 16, 4PM)Contributed by Megan Martinez on 10/09/17 On Monday, October 16th from 4-5PM in Williams 320, Dr. Carolyn Gordon of the Dartmouth Math Department will be giving a general audience talk as part of the Tensor Lecture Series. Title: You Can’t Hear the Shape of a Drum Abstract: In spectroscopy, one analyzes the frequencies of light waves to determine, for example, the composition of stars. Analogously, what can one decode concerning a vibrating object from the characteristic frequencies of sound emitted? In particular, as phrased by Mark Kac, “Can one hear the shape of a drum?” We will discuss “audible properties” of drums, look at examples of exotic-shaped “drums” that sound identical, and relate this question to other problems such as counting paths. All are welcome!
