Queer Identities Online in Ireland: Rural and Urban DynamicsContributed by Katherine Cohen-Filipic on 10/17/17 How do gay and same-sex oriented men in Ireland meet romantic and sexual partners? How does technology help men in small villages or big cities meet? The Sociology Department is hosting Professor Mark Doyle, ABD in sociology at University College Dublin (Ireland). Doyle will give a free, public talk on Monday, October 30 at 7:00pm in Clark Lounge. Light refreshments will be available. Mark Doyle’s research is funded by the Irish Research Council. His book chapter on gay Irish team athletes was published in 2016, and he has presented at conferences and events across Ireland. His research is qualitative and mixed-method, with interests in communication, media, and theory. Doyle is the founder of “Dublin Calling,” a public sociology podcast from University College Dublin’s Sociology Department. Doyle’s presentation will enlighten the audience and evoke questions about queer selves, social media, and the complexity of cultural contexts for identity and self. The event is co-sponsored by the Women's and Gender Studies Program, the Center for LGBT Education, Outreach and Services, the Psychology Department, and the Anthropology Department.
