Pay money to use the toilet? Unsafe hygiene practice for women and girls? Diarrheal diseases from open defecation practice? Why it is so hard for people to talk about access to proper toilets?

4.5 billion people around the world do not have access to the toilet. Responding to this rising global issue, IC Food For Thought is hosting the World Toilet Day Education Week to raise the awareness among Ithaca College campus community. Our major event opening the week is A Global Sanitation Discussion on November 13th in Clark Lounge at 7 pm. The panel will focus on the impacts of lacking access to the toilet to human health, nutrition, justice and education. The panelists are experts and students who have great experiences and knowledge of global sanitation:

  • Rebecca Evans, Campus Sustainability Coordinator, Office of Energy Management and Sustainability
  • Professor Stewart Auyash, Chair of Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education
  • Professor Srijana Bajracharya, Department of Health Promotion and Physical Education
  • Kathryn O’Connor, Health Sciences ’17
  • Georgia Caplan, Eco Rep Program Manager, Environmental Science' 18

The event will be open to the public, and food will be provided.

Throughout the week of November 13th to 19th, IC Food For Thought will also fundraise money to Water Organization to make loans for water and sanitation more accessible to families living in developing countries around the world.
