Please join us as Dr. Adam Light gives a talk for the Department of Physics & AstronomyContributed by Jill Ackerman on 12/03/17 Dr. Adam Light gives a talk entitled: Plasma Fluctuations for Fun and Profit In plasma physics, we study systems with ~10^23 interacting components, which self-organize into beautiful macroscopic structures through microscopic fluctuations. Fluctuations are ubiquitous and complicated, but we view them as an opportunity to learn about how plasma systems work. This talk will give a brief introduction to some self-organized plasma systems and show three ways we interact with fluctuations in order to understand why and how plasmas choose preferred states. I will describe two current projects with undergraduates involving fluctuation and dynamical systems analysis, and my plans for actively driving fluctuations in order to learn about self-organization. Tues., Dec. 5, 2017 Pizza and Refreshments will be available. Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact the department assistant at jackerman@ithaca.edu. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible. |
