Newly approved Diversity perspective course in ICC (ID & III, CA)Contributed by Timothy Johnson on 12/05/17 MUNM 25800, Music of Latin America, has just been approved for the Diversity perspective in the ICC for spring 2018. The course also fulfills the Creative Arts perspective in the Identities theme and the Inquiry, Imagination, and Innovation theme. Music of Latin America, taught by Prof. Carlos Ramirez, meets MWF at 1-1:50pm and is open to non-music majors as well as music majors. It includes a foundational survey of the musical idioms in Latin America; an in-depth study of specific issues found in contemporary Latinx musics, with a strong emphasis on cultural politics of race, class, and gender; and a case study of how reggaeton can restructure racial identities, building links between the Caribbean, the African Diaspora, and the globe. |
