Patricia Zimmermann, Screen Studies, publishes Book Chapter on Indonesian new media in Asian Video Cultures (Duke)Contributed by Karen Armstrong on 12/08/17 Patricia R. Zimmermann, professor of screen studies and co-director of the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, has published a chapter in the recently published book, Asian Video Cultures: In the Penumbra of the Global (Duke, 2017), edited by Joshua Neves and Bhaskar Sarkar. Her chapter is entitled “EngageMedia: The Gado Gado Tactics of New Social Media in Indonesia.” The chapter analyzes EngageMedia, an environmental and human rights social media portal engaging the Asia Pacific region, looking at how it navigates contradictions between the dissemination of consumer-grade, accessible media technologies, the opening of social media, the closing down of commercial media through regulation, and the need for distribution of works produced across disparate locations and languages in Southeast Asia. The chapter enters debates about contradictory interstitial zones and the malleability and migration of media between and across different media sectors and communities of reception.
