PREREQUISITE: Permission of Instructor.
STUDENTS: Students are expected to have basic proficiency in a musical instrument, and to be able to carry a tune; consultation with the instructor in advance is recommended.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This class builds an understanding of hospice in America and the uses of music in end of life care to traverse the hospice culture, issues of death and dying, and the current fields of music and end of life care. Working with local Hospicare & Palliative Care Services in on site classes, students will use reflective journal writing, outside readings and video, class discussion and musical exchange to explore music as a healing agent. Student will learn and practice music appropriate for hospice patients and their families, interfacing with patients in the hospice residence whenever possible. Each student will shadow two to three therapeutic music sessions with instructor and Hospicare's certified therapeutic harpist.
