BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad.  The program aims to support students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to, students with high financial need, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences, students with diverse ethnic backgrounds, and students with disabilities.  To be eligible you must be receiving a Federal Pell grant. Over 2,300 scholarships of up to $5,000 will be awarded this academic year for U.S. citizen undergraduates to study abroad. Award amounts will vary depending on the length of study and student need with the average award being approximately $4,000.  Students who apply for and receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad may then be eligible to receive an additional Critical Need Language Supplement from the Gilman Scholarship Program for a total possible award of up to $8,000.  More information is available on the Gilman website.  The summer, fall, and academic year scholarship application deadline is March 6.

The program’s goal is to increase the number of Americans with first-hand exposure to and understanding of Asia and its peoples and cultures. The Freeman-Asia program is open students who wish to study in Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Macao, Malaysia, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, or Vietnam. Awards are up to $5,000 for one semester.  More information is available at Freeman-ASIA website.  Summer 2018 deadline is March 14, and Fall/Academic Year 2018 deadline is April 11.
