Out to Lead: LGBTQ Inclusive Student Leadership Education and Development

Speakers:

TK Morton: Program Coordinator for the Office of Student Inclusion and Involvement at Edgewood College

Luca Maurer: LGBT Education, Outreach & Services Program Director, Center for Counseling, Health and Wellness at Ithaca College

Integrating lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) inclusive practices and themes in leadership education can have many benefits. Leadership development opportunities that are inclusive of LGBTQ history, people and themes can empower students as individuals and community leaders, provide safe space to build community and explore intersecting identities, and equip the next generation of leaders with skills to address the advantages and challenges of a diverse society. It can reduce barriers to LGBTQ student participation and create unique opportunities for campus and community collaboration. Approaching this through a social justice framework can serve to examine and confront oppression, disrupt and challenge stereotypes and societal stigma that fuel pervasive structural inequality, and counter deficit models of students who have marginalized identities. This session will highlight best practices for LGBTQ inclusion, review the growing body of research on LGBTQ student leadership development, and provide the opportunity for participants to share their LGBTQ inclusion successes and challenges.
