Frances Gallardo (San Juan, 1984) creates paper-based works that range from intricate two-dimensional collages to large-scale sculptural installations. Her work approaches the broad subject of landscape through personal experience, blending the geopolitical with the imaginary and the poetic. Her compositions are inhabited by images of hurricanes and other weather patterns, waves, dust and insects, exploring the visual veils above and around us. 

Gallardo received an MFA in Studio Art from Cornell University and a BFA in Drawing and Humanities from the University of Puerto Rico. She has exhibited in national and international venues such as the Museum of Latin American Art, Los Angeles, Perez Art Museum, Miami, Instituto de Cultura Puertorriquena, San Juan, Imperial Ancestral Temple Art Museum, Beijing and the KUMU Art Museum, Tallinn. Upcoming projects include ‘Line to Line,’ MTA Arts & Design ‘Percent for Art’ public art commission, participation in ‘Relational Undercurrents: Contemporary Art of the Caribbean’ at Columbia University’s Wallach Art Gallery and the NYSCA Decentralization Artist-in-the-Community Grant supported artist-in-residence at the Tompkins County Public Library Makerspace, Ithaca.
