Have you ever tried to register for a class that appeared to have seats remaining, only to find it closed?

This can happen to students who are registering for a class that is cross-listed, which means the course is being offered under two different subjects.  (For example, “Health Communication” is offered as a Health course and a Communication Studies course.)  The confusion can arise from the way Homer indicates registration availability.

HOW HOMER INDICATES REMAINING SEATS:

For a given section, Homer lists the section capacity (“Cap”), the actual number of seats taken (“Act”), and the remaining seats (“Rem”).  But this refers to how many students have registered under that particular subject (e.g. Health), while other students have also registered for it under the other subject (e.g. Communication Studies).  To see the actual number of remaining seats, you must look at the number of remaining Cross List Seats (“XL Rem”).  If that number is zero, the class is full / closed.

TO GET A CAPACITY OVERRIDE FOR A CROSS-LISTED SECTION:

IC Workflow cannot process capacity override requests for cross-listed sections.  (It only looks at a single section so it “thinks” there are still seats remaining, so it won’t let you submit the capacity override.)  So to request an override, you need to visit your Dean’s Office.  If approved, they will process the override for you so that you can register for the class.
