To mark the 50th Anniversary of the Global Uprising of 1968, Ithaca College’s Department of Sociology and Cinemapolis will be screening the Classic Film Reel Documentary about the 1968 Occupation of Columbia University.

DURING THE SPRING OF 1968, students at Columbia University joined forces with Harlem-based activists to occupy key university buildings and put an end to business as usual. They opposed Columbia’s participation in the Institute for Defense Analysis and its complicity in endless war. They also condemned Columbia’s plans to build an exclusive gymnasium in Morningside Park, which would deny service to community members and deprive them of beloved green space. The Columbia occupation was a flashpoint in the global uprisings of 1968. What lessons might we learn from these struggles fifty years later?

The post-show discussion will feature commentary by Russell Rickford and Zillah Eisenstein on the significance of the Columbia occupation to contemporary movements like Women’s Strike and Black Lives Matter.

Russell Rickford is Professor of History, Africana Studies, and American Studies at Cornell University. He is an active participant in the Movement for Black Lives.

Zillah Eisenstein is Emeritus Professor of Politics at Ithaca College. She has published extensively on abolitionist feminism and is an International Women’s Strike organizer.
