 The Ithacan has been named a finalist for Best All-Around Non-Daily Student Newspaper in the Northeast Region in this year's Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards competition. The awards are presented for papers published during calendar year 2017.

 In addition, Nicole Pimental has been named a finalist in the General News Reporting category for her story “Faculty of Color at Ithaca College Experience Cultural Taxation,” published April 5, 2017, and Grace Elletson has been named a finalist in the same category for “Barstool Ithaca Raises Questions About Sports Culture at IC,” published October 25, 2017. 

Winners will be announced at the SPJ Region 1 conference April 21–22 at Temple University in Philadelphia. Regional winners will go on to compete against the winners in their categories from SPJ's other 11 regions for SPJ's national Mark of Excellence awards.

SPJ is the largest professional organization of reporters and editors in the country.
