Born-from-Fire" - Warfare and the Rise of Maya Civilization.Contributed by Michael Malpass on 04/03/18 Dr. Thomas Garrison (Anthropology) will present a lecture on new data from his research on the Maya in CNS 208 on Thursday, April 5 at 6:30 pm. The Classic period Maya were no strangers to conflict. However, warfare is most frequently presented as a catalyst to time of cultural transition or societal collapse. Using the name of an invading Teotihuacan warrior as a metaphor, I will argue that conflict was critical to the rise, not the fall, of Maya civilization. New data of extensive linear earthworks and related defensive systems support the idea of pervasive conflict that defined the Maya for all time periods.
