COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will explore the intersection of race and religion, alongside gender, sexuality, culture, and more. It will challenge students to think about how racial identities, theories, and movements implicated the way religious communities thought about the divine and their relationship to it. In doing so, we will explore historical and contemporary movements in the context of North America, but also globally. Some examples of case studies this course will engage with include African-American Islam (i.e., Nation of Islam), Rastafarianism, indigenous spiritualities, and American Buddhism and Hinduism.
