Ithaca, NY - April 17th 2018 - IC Color, Ithaca College student organizers focused on creating lasting change in Ithaca College's Protestant Community, announced today that they will be holding a speak out April 26th in Job 160 at 12:10pm. This speak out is being held to educate the general public on the ways that Ithaca College is funding homophobia. IC Color was founded after an article in The Ithacan was released exposing the discriminatory practices of the Ithaca College Protestant Community, some of which include the harassment of LGBTQ students, the tokenization of POC students, and perpetuating rape culture through enforcing rigid gender roles. This event will feature speakers from the student community, faith community, and broader Ithaca community, addressing the ways in which the Ithaca College Protestant Community has failed its students, and how Ithaca College continues to fund them, despite student outcry. One speaker, Vanessa Zimmerman, co-founder of IC Color, will share how she was unfairly forced out of her job at the chapel after being subjected to persistent homophobic bullying by the Ithaca College Protestant Community. Another speaker, Reverend Megan Castellan of St. John’s Episcopal Church, an affirming and welcoming church to all located in downtown Ithaca, will talk about how churches can be affirming, and why it’s essential that they are. In addition to the opportunities to learn about where student’s tuition dollars are actually going, there will be ways to join and support the movement. IC Color will present their action plan to apply continuous pressure to the college until major changes occur.
