Please join the Journalism Department in celebrating the retirement of Professor Matt Mogekwu this Friday April 20 from 2-4 in Park 223.
Dr. Matt Mogekwu was hired into the chair position in the Journalism Department in 2008 and served in that role until May 2017. Prior to coming to Ithaca, Matt taught at Bowie State University and was a faculty member and administrator at universities in South Africa, Swaziland, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. Dr. Mogekwu earned his B.A. degree in Journalism from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater,his Master of Arts degree in Communications from the Michigan State University, and his Ph.D. in Mass Communications from the Ernie Pyle School of Journalism at Indiana University. He is internationally recognized for his research and service in the areas of media and peace building, international communication, press freedom and sustainable development in Africa, and capacity building for media practitioners in developing countries. His work has been presented at conference in Portugal, Turkey, Japan, India, and Australia, and he has been an active leader in the International Peace Research Association (IPRA), serving on its Governing Council. His students praise him for his passionate presentations about the role of journalists in society, for his ability to create an engaging atmosphere in his classroom, and for his generous mentoring of students, especially those of African and African-American heritage.
