   The Ithacan once again had a strong showing in the New York Press Association’s Better College Newspaper competition, being named Best Overall College Newspaper for 2017, the NYPA's top collegiate honor, as well as winning first place in four categories and second and third place in two others. In addition, nine staff members were honored for their individual work in the paper. The awards were for work produced during the 2017 calendar year (Kayla Dwyer ’17, spring editor-in chief; Aidan Quigley ’18, fall editor-in-chief).

Those awards are:

  • First Place for General Excellence
  • First Place for Editorial Writing
  • First Place for Best Sports Coverage
  • First Place for Best Use of Social Media
  • Second Place for Best Website
  • Third Place for Design

The individual staff member awards are:

  • First Place, Column Writing — Mahad Olad
  • First Place, Feature Story — Vinica Weiss, “Saved by the Game,“ April 6, 2017.
  • First Place, Photography — Connor Lange
  • Second Place, News Story — Kayla Dwyer, “Roadblocks for Success,” April 27, 2017.
  • Third Place, News Story — Grace Elletson and Meaghan McElroy, “Down to the Wire,” March 30, 2017.
  • Third Place, Feature Story — Kalia Kornegay and Celisa Calacal, “Tangled in Politics,” April 6, 2017.
  • Third Place, Photography — Connor Lange
  • Honorable Mention, Feature Story — Samantha Cavalli, “Bring It On,” March 23, 2017.

 The awards were announced during the NYPA’s annual convention on April 7 at the Albany Hilton.
