"Chronicles of Discontent, Tribunes for Change: Columbia and Its Underground Press in the Vietnam Era", co-authored with Seth Smith and appearing in the April issue of the Missouri Historical Review, examines the historical significance of alternative and underground newspapers in Columbia, Missouri, in the 1960s and 1970s.

he suppression of one paper during the period resulted in a U.S. Supreme Court case that helped to redefine free speech in the United States.  The authors also note that "In their coverage of issues such as the discriminatory treatment of women, minorities, or homosexuals on campus or in the community; the nascent black nationalism among African American students at the University of Missouri; the suppression of free speech; the rise of the local antiwar movement; and even the right-wing student reaction to the antiwar movement and Students for a Democratic Society, Columbia’s underground papers provide a glimpse of an era that seems at once both remote and very familiar."
