Abstract:

Mainstream International Political Economy is found wanting in comparison to three works in cultural and structural global political economy, namely: K.N. Chaudhuri's Asia Before Europe, Eric Wolf's Europe and the People Without History, and L.S. Stavrianos' Global Rift.  We emphasize the contrast between parts and wholes, reification and flow, the duality of structures and differentiated holism, and the ideological/political basis of theory construction. One of our goals is to bring more attention to these three astonishing books.  Perhaps our most contentious point is that theorists racialize their work by employing methodological individualism/methodological nationalism.
