Assistant Professor of Writing, Thomas Girshin, will present early results from his study of Gulag prisoner letters at the Rhetoric Society of America Conference in Minneapolis this June. The presentation, “Letters from the Gulag: Rhetoric and Censorship in the Stalinist Soviet Union,” analyzes the rhetorical strategies of Soviet gulag prisoners in their letters home, drawing on the letters of Latvian journalist and poet Arsenii Formakov and Ukrainian poet Michael Dray-Khmara.
