Chemistry Post-Doctoral Teaching Scholar Alexandre (Alex) H. Pinto won the Best Poster Competition in the American Chemical Society (ACS) Northeast Nanomaterials Meeting, carried out in Lake Placid, NY, in June 2018. The poster presented by Alex described the research developed by him and junior undergraduate student Julian Kellner-Rogers during the last academic year.

The research poster entitled “Kinetic Study of the Adsorption of Methylene Blue onto Chitosan: Evidence for Non-Arrhenius Behavior” presented the kinetic parameters related to the natural compound chitosan interacts with the textile dye methylene blue, revealing the potentialities and limitations of this method. This research is included in the scope of the search of better agents for wastewater remediation.

This was the first edition American Chemical Society Northeast Nanomaterials Meeting and had participation of attendants from many different Northeastern states, including New York, Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. An ACS Regional Meeting award helps confirm the commitment of Ithaca College Chemistry Department to promoting high level research opportunities for our students.
