Vincent Wei-cheng Wang, Professor of Politics and until recently dean of School of Humanities and Sciences, has published a co-authored article, “Does Candidate Nomination in Districts Increase Party Votes of Small Parties? Evidence from the 2016 Taiwan Legislative Elections,” Japanese Journal of Political Science, 19(3)(September 2018): 1-13,https://doi.org/10.1017/S1468109918000129

This study addresses why small parties nominate candidates to run in the district elections and how nomination of district candidates could influence small parties’ share of party votes.  Using evidence from the 2016 Taiwan legislative election, the authors find that once the small parties pass the threshold for vote allocation in Proportional Representation (PR) slate, their nomination of strong candidates in the Single-Member District (SMD) slate actually create positive ‘spillover effect’ on the party's PR seats.
