On Tuesday, August 14th a comprehensive report of sexual abuse and its cover up within the Catholic Church in Pennsylvania was released. This comes after a series of related events, including the removal of Archbishop McCarrick of Washington and the mass resignation of the Catholic bishops of Chile over the sex abuse scandal. Ithaca College Catholic acknowledges the trauma and distress surrounding these disturbing reports and cover ups. This is a huge issue that impacts everyone, Catholic and beyond. The Ithaca College Catholic ministry team would like to express our own personal sorrow and disgust. We are committed to serving the campus community and being a part of the process of healing, both personally and institutionally. Our team is available to listen and support in any way we can. All members of the Ithaca College community are welcome to visit our offices in Muller Chapel.
Additionally, please remember that there are counseling services available to all members of the Ithaca College community. Students may consult with counselors from the Center for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) by calling 607-274-3136 or reach out to the Health Center at 607-274-3177. Any victim of sexual abuse by clergy or other church personnel is encouraged to contact civil authorities. To receive help and guidance from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester, contact Deborah Housel, victim assistance coordinator at 585-328-3210, ext. 1555 or toll free at 1 (800) 388-7177, ext. 1555 or by emailing victimsassistance@dor.org.
