Chemistry Postdoctoral Fellow Dr. Alexandre Pinto published a paper in the Journal of Chemical Education, and delivered an oral presentation at the 256th National meeting of the American Chemical Society, this August. In the paper, Alex describes the creation process of the elective course called Modern Techniques for Solid State Materials Characterization, taught by the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Ithaca College.

The experience and results described by Alex have the intention to help other undergraduate institutions. The materials chemistry course introduces students to topics they are likely to need in graduate school or in employment in industry. These topics are not traditionally taught in undergraduate institutions.

Alex delivered an oral presentation in the Chemical Education Division of the American Chemical Society meeting, receiving positive feedback from the audience, which mainly consisted of chemical educators from high schools and colleges. The American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific society and the national meetings are considered highly prestigious.
