Submitted on behalf of Provost Cornish: With Vincent Wang’s departure from the H&S Dean’s role, we will be conducting a national search for a new Dean of the School of Humanities & Sciences. The search will begin right away after the semester begins, so I’m writing you now to ask you to consider self-nominating to serve on the search committee. Ideally, the search committee will include two faculty members from each of the four academic areas represented in the School (arts, humanities, natural sciences, social sciences), two additional faculty members at-large from outside of the School, a dean, and an H&S student. The committee chair or co-chairs is to be determined. The Provost will select H&S faculty members on the committee from among those put forward on a slate by the H&S Senate; the faculty from outside of H&S will be similarly selected from a slate put forward by Faculty Council. Members of the search committee must keep all aspects of the search confidential. Our search plan is to engage in outreach during the first weeks of the fall semester, conduct first round interviews in mid-December, and invite finalists to campus in late January, 2019. We will be conducting an open search, which means that there will be opportunities for any interested member of the campus community to have contact with candidates during the finalist stage. To that end, consultants from Witt/Kieffer, who will be assisting us with our search, will be on campus September 7th to engage members of the campus and H&S communities in listening sessions that will inform development of the search prospectus. Nominations (including self-nominations) of H&S faculty interested in serving on the search committee should be submitted to H&S Senate Chair Hugh Egan (eganh@ithaca.edu) by the close business Tuesday, September 4, 2018. Nominations (including self-nominations) for faculty from outside of H&S interested in serving on the search committee should be submitted to Faculty Council Chair Tom Swensen (tswensen@ithaca.edu), by the close of business, Tuesday, September 4, 2018. The composition of the search committee will be announced Wednesday, September 5 and the search committee will meet with representatives from Witt Kieffer, Friday, September 7, from 1:30 – 3:00. Many thanks for considering this opportunity to serve! |
