Dr. Mary Condé taught Shakespeare at the Ithaca College London Center from 2014 to 2017. Always a lively presence and a much-valued member of the London Center faculty, Mary passed away on June 25th of this year.

Mary was formerly a senior lecturer and honorary senior research fellow at the School of English of Queen Mary, University of London, and held degrees from Oxford and London in English Literature, the Politics of Rights, and Social Anthropology. She presented papers at over 100 international conferences, co-edited a book on Caribbean Women Writers: Fiction in English (Palgrave Macmillan), and both taught and gave invited guest lectures at universities around the world. Her academic credentials notwithstanding, Mary Condé valued kindness above all and most enjoyed travelling, being with family, and laughing with friends.

A memorial service for Mary was held on August 25th at Emmanuel Church, West Hampstead, in London. The service was led by Father Jonathan Kester and attended by Mary’s many friends and colleagues. Wallace Stevens’ The House Was Quiet and The World Was Calm was read by Anabel Donald and Mary’s daughter Jasmine gave a beautiful tribute in loving memory of her mother.

Mary will be missed by the staff and students of the Ithaca College London Center and the Office of International Programs and Extended Studies.
