IC Professor Jerome Fung, gives a talk for the Physics & Astronomy Spring Seminar SeriesContributed by Jill Ackerman on 04/21/19 Tuesday April 23: Spring Seminar Series Please join us for a talk with Jerome Fung - “The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics: Groundbreaking Inventions in Laser Physics” The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for pioneering achievements that use lasers. Half the prize was awarded to Donna Strickland and Gérard Mourou for developing a technique called chirped pulse amplification for amplifying ultrashort laser pulses. The other half was awarded to Arthur Ashkin for the invention of optical tweezers, in which light exerts forces to trap nanoscale objects. I will discuss the underlying physics behind these inventions and highlight some of their applications.
