Please join us this coming Friday, September 28 at the Handwerker Gallery from 1-2 pm to hear an artist lecture by Alex Callender.

Callender works in the mediums of painting, drawing and installation, and has shown nationally and internationally and completed residencies with art institutions such as Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, The Vermont Studio Center, Urban Glass in Brooklyn and DRAWinternational in France. Callender is an Assistant Professor of Art at Smith College.

From Callender's artist statement:

In the series Whatever Scatters and Comes Together, I use the work of 18th century Colonial painter Agostino Brunias, who mainly painted women in "everyday" social spaces in Caribbean life for primarily European audiences. I interrupt and reconstruct his works to explore representations of gender and racial hierarchies in colonial imagery, and the cultural use of the decorative arts to mediate these relationships to the viewer.

I use patterns from traditional Delftware, textile and wallpaper designs to signify both Colonial history, and the migration of decorative surfaces in relation to the assimilation and hybridization of colonial landscapes. I am particularly interested in the role of women in this historical period and how in these instances of colonial imagery women are depicted through their relationship to luxury goods, buying power and racial identity.
