October is LGBT History Month

Contributed by Luca Maurer on 10/02/18

October is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) History Month.  Each day throughout the month a video highlighting a different historical figure will be available for viewing in a special section of the LGBT Center Website: LGBT History Month Featured Videos

Each of these 31 leaders were nominated by leaders of state, national and international LGBT organizations and from the public, and have achieved success in a variety of different endeavors, were national heroes, or advanced LGBT civil rights.

The LGBT Community is one of the only communities worldwide that does not always learn its history at home, in the public schools, or in religious or other institutions. LGBT History Month teaches our heritage, provides role models, builds community, and educates about our unique national and international contributions.

This week’s featured historical figures are:
October 1: Gilbert Baker, Rainbow Flag Designer
October 2: Lance Bass, Pop Singer
October 3: James Beard, Internationally Renowned Chef
October 4: Elizabeth Birch, HRC Executive Director
October 5: Melvin Boozer, Gay Pioneer
October 6: Sandro Botticelli, Renaissance Painter
October 7: Richard Burns, Movement Leader
October 8: Joanthan Capehart, Pulitzer-Winning Journalist
October 9: Francisco Cartagena, Puerto Rican Activist
October 10: Debra Chasnoff, Documentary Filmmaker

LGBT History Month videos and other materials are made possible by the Equality Forum, a national and international LGBT civil rights organization with an educational focus.
