It has been a busy few months for Dr. Evis Sammoutis, Assistant Professor, Music Composition with a lot of news on several fronts.
· In the summer, Evis travelled to Cyprus to attend the 2018 Sound and Music Computing Conference (SMC) at the Cyprus University of Technology. Evis was Chair of the Music Selection Committee for this major International Conference. · Evis’ application with French Ensemble C Barré received a highly competitive grant from FACE (French American Cultural Exchange) Foundation New Music Fund. · UPISKetch, an application for smartphones and tablets that Evis was instrumental in commissioning as part of “Interfaces”, (an EU funded project for which Evis is coordinating Cyprus' participation), is now officially launched at the App Store for free public download. · Last month, Evis travelled to Leicester, UK to present a paper at the “Bringing New Music to New Audiences” International Conference taking place at the Music, Technology and Innovation Research Centre, at De Montfort University. He also travelled to Cyprus to attend the 10th Pharos Arts Foundation International Contemporary Music Festival, for which he is cofounder and Artistic Director. · Evis’ recent article entitled "The Legacy of the 'Cyprus Codex' (MS Torino J.II.9): Creating New Technologies and Compositions through a Collaborative Process” was published in early October at Circuit: Musiques contemporaines, Vol. 28, No 2 (2018), a peer review journal. The issue with Evis’ article was already presented on 3 October at the Canadian Music Center in Toronto, on 11 October at IRCAM Paris, as a spotlight issue at the IRCAM library, on 1 November at Montreal Conservatory and on 3 November at Salle Multi du Musée national des Beaux-arts du Québec. · Evis was recently informed that he was among a handful of composers selected for the SCI 2019 National Conference / Robb Composers’ Symposium, taking place at the University of New Mexico. Evis’ work was selected to be performed by Arditti Quartet, his piece being one few select works from over 1000 entries. In terms of performances of his music, there were several concerts in the composer’s homeland, Cyprus in addition to other national and international concerts: 1) Ensemble Modern performed his work Metioron at Nicosia, 2) Klangforum Wien gave the world premiere of his newest work Secret Garden at the same venue and 3) Claudio Bettinelli presented Dactyl(s).In addition, Peter Sheppard Skaerved performed Nicosia Etudes at: 4) A.G. Leventis Gallery in Nicosia (Cyprus) 5) Wilton’s Concert Hall (UK) 6) Deptford Town Hall Council Chambers (UK) 7) The Forge (London, UK) 8) Davis Theatre, University of Wisconsin River Falls (USA) 9) Middlebury College (USA). 10) Finally, District5 Quintet gave the third performance of J.II.9 fragments at Georgetown University (Washington, DC) last September, as part of a featured concert during the DNMC's inaugural conference, New Music DC. The work’s commission had been made possible by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program, with generous funding provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and the Chamber Music America Endowment Fund.
