Check out the First Issue of Roots: The Seventh Season, a Student Run JournalContributed by Cheryl Gunther on 12/14/18 Check out Roots Journal’s very first issue: The Seventh Season. Roots is a student-run journal based out of the Environmental Studies and Sciences department of Ithaca College. The journal is written and produced by students in Professor Fae Dremock’s Growing Roots class, an experimental 300-level course offered to all majors. Students in the class have worked all semester to get the website and journal up and running, by writing feature pieces, taking photos, interviewing experts, recording and editing podcasts, and creating a website through Squarespace. This issue features three major sections including Wane, Drip, and Flare. Wane focuses on animal evacuations during natural disasters, specifically Hurricane Florence. Articles in this section discuss emergency workers staying behind to care for animals during the storm, stranded livestock during natural disasters, legendary wild horses on the Carolina coast, hurricane impacts on wildlife, and the story of a woman who was arrested for taking care of abandoned animals. Drip discusses harmful algae blooms in the form of Cyanobacteria in Cayuga Lake, as well as effects in other areas, for example Madison, Wisconsin. It also talks about policy by the City of Ithaca, and what Ithaca is doing to prevent injuries from occurring due to the cyanotoxins produced by Cyanobacteria. Flare chose their topic with the intention of speaking to solutions, as opposed to issues. They focused on solar development in and around the Ithaca area with the intention of raising awareness toward projects which have been completed, as well as those that are in development stages. Although it’s possible for solar to be implemented on an individual home-to-home basis, often times projects are wide scale. Therefore, it is important that communities are informed and involved through the development process.
