Raquel Jacobs (class of 2020) and Dr. Ellie Fitts Fulmer (Education Department) presented a paper at the National Association for Multicultural Education’s annual meeting in Memphis this November. Their paper, titled, “Say the Word: Teaching and Omitting the N-Word in Schools” explores the question of when, how, or if a teacher should incorporate lessons involving the n-word.  Using Geneva Gay’s (2000/2018) framework for Culturally Responsive Teaching, Jacobs analyzed high school language arts lessons available in online databases to draw conclusions and recommendations for teachers. This work grew out of Jacob’s personal experiences, and connects with Geneva Gay’s assertion that “the personal is a powerful and significant source of knowledge.”
