Policy Change for Paid Time Away

Contributed by Lynn Hyde on 01/08/19

Ithaca College will institute an effective/operational change in how paid time away (PTA) is accrued.  Beginning June 1, 2020, accruals for vacation, sick time, and personal time will take place per pay period throughout the fiscal year, instead of being front-loaded at the beginning of the year. This accrual method is similar to the process that the College used prior to 2010 and is the norm for higher education institutions.  The actual amount of annual vacation, sick, and personal time will not be reduced for eligible employees.

Please note that in an effort to provide employees with the maximum amount of time to plan for this change, the current system will remain in place for current employees until June 1, 2020.

The timing of the change will give employees a full year of transition in order to make their plans for summer vacation, etc. For all current employees, PTA will be front-loaded for the entire year on June 1, 2019. New employees hired on or after June 1, 2019, will follow the new per pay period accrual method.  As such, they will start accruing PTA after the first pay period following their date of hire.  Vacation PTA maximums can be referenced in the Paid Time Away Benefits Policy found here

The Office of Human Resources will provide more information in the spring on how to use the new Oracle Cloud Absence Management system for recording PTA. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact us at humanresources@ithaca.edu or 607-274-8000.
