All members of the Ithaca College community are encouraged to use their best judgment in traveling safely and avoiding unnecessary risks during the winter storm that will bring snow and ice to much of the Northeast this weekend, with substantial snowfall in the Ithaca area and the rest of Upstate New York. Travel throughout the region may be significantly disrupted, and students who have planned to return to Ithaca for the start of the spring semester might be affected by flight and bus cancellations as well as difficult road conditions.

Ithaca College officials are closely monitoring the weather, and at this time we do not anticipate any change to the scheduled start of classes on Tuesday, Jan. 22. However, we also understand that students and their families may be anxious about returning to campus. Faculty are aware that circumstances may not make it possible for some students to be in class on the first day.

While there are no classes on Monday, Jan. 21, the college is scheduled to be open and providing all services to students.

Employees are expected to work their regular hours unless the college is officially closed, but we recognize that conditions may make it appropriate for a supervisor to be flexible in allowing employees to depart from their normal schedules. Those who miss time because of late arrival, early departure or absence due to inclement weather or other special conditions may choose to make up the time or use personal or vacation time.

Any announcement of a change in the college’s operating status will be made via the Emergency Notification System (ENS), social media channels, the college’s website and the Emergency Hotline (274-1495). More information about emergency closing policies and procedures can be found in the Ithaca College Policy Manual.

Message to Campus Community Regarding Winter Storm Comment from khusselbee on 01/21/19
Most incoming busses and trains have been delayed or cancelled for the
entire weekend (including today, Monday). My bus is now rescheduled for
10pm Tuesday night and it’s unfair to ALL of those who couldn’t make it
back to school in time / safely. I’m now missing so many classes and that’s
not fair. Most of IC’s students come from other states. How are we
supposed to all get to school when the storm is IN the school area? Are
you really expecting a large portion of your school to not be in classes all
day Tuesday and possibly into Wednesday due to safety reasons IN THE
ITHACA / NEW YORK AREA. Safety concerns should’ve been taken into
account instead of putting so many students not only awkwardly behind in
their classes, but possibly in danger. Not right, Ithaca College. I highly
recommend the Campus Community re-evaluate holding classes as
scheduled while you still have the option to. It isn’t safe to urge people in
through the storm and it’s unfair to those who are set back possibly even
past Tuesday. Please rethink your choice because some people will be
forced to miss more than one day when it isn’t their fault. I understand that
the Community is aware and understanding of these early absences, but it
doesn’t change the fact that many will still be and feel set back, left with
days worth of school being missed because of the storm in your area.
We’re trying to get there, we promise.
Regards,
A sad college student trying desperately to get to school safely and in time.
