Ithaca College

We are well into our Black History Month celebrations, and there are plenty more to come! The Center for IDEAS and student organizations all over Ithaca College have been working to make this month one that honors Black History at our institution in an engaging way. Below are events happening on campus, ranging from a student organization-run Talent Showcase to educational sessions on blackness and social justice work. This month's theme is "Mending Our Broken Hearts." 

Melanincholy by Damiano “The Miserable Genius”, Presented by Café Con IDEAS

Café con IDEAS provides a platform for student-artists to develop and project their voice in a 45-minute set while sharing personal narratives rooted in identity and anti-oppression. Ranging from comedy, spoken word, dance and performance, song, and visual creations, each session is designed to engage the audience through creative arts and empower individuals to look inward and consider their own responsibility to social change.

This first set will include rap, poetry, and visual art focused on Black thought and freedom. Light refreshments will be served.

Partnership in Anti-Racism, Presented by the Center for Ideas 

Serena Velazquez, IDEAS Peer Educator, will lead attendees through some effective strategies for anti-racist partnership and identify how partnerships can be different from allyship. This workshop counts as an SLI.

Sided Hands/Feeling Hearts, Presented by LGBT Center

The first feature documentary about Lorraine Hansberry, the visionary playwright of A Raisin in the Sun. Artist, activist and public intellectual, Hansberry was outspoken and defiant against injustice and her works tackling race, human rights, women’s equality and sexuality anticipated social and political movements on the horizon.

The Illustration of Bodily Love, Presented by Emily Jimenez

Make Love Make Sense, Presented by Jeremiah Sheppert

Many of us have wondered what our perfect relationship would look like, and, whether or not we admit it, some of us enjoy admiring celebrity relationships and comparing them to our own. In this SLI event we will be discussing the aspects of a successful relationship and evaluating the societal standards of black love. We will indulge in games and critique an episode of the show Grownish.

Black History Month Showcase, Presented by Sister 2 Sister

Sister 2 Sister will be celebrating Black History Month this year by embracing the talent of students of color on our campus. Refreshments are served during intermission.

In this art-share event that showcases Black talent and creativity, artists will express a variety of work from paintings & poetry to songs & dance.

Come to join the Ithaca community in a free showing of the documentary produced by Ithaca College students and faculty in the Roy H. Park School of Communications.

DOPE: A Step Fest, Presented by D.O.P.E Steppers of IC

Join D.O.P.E. Steppers in their step performance, celebrating an art form that showcases culture and experience that is African-derived, rhythmic step, through practice and performance.

Curls and Coils Demo Day, Presented by Curls and Coils 

Curls and Coils will be hosting a demo day where we demonstrate different techniques for how to do twist outs, wash and go’s and finger coils on a variety of different hair types and porosity. We will be demonstrating using our favorite products and we plan to have food and games to keep the event interactive and entertaining.

Box of Self-Love, Presented by Center for IDEAS and BOLD Scholars

Join our BOLD Scholars and the Center for IDEAS in this fun project to create your own box of self-love! The scholars will be presenting on the difference between habit-centered goals and outcome-centered goals.

Discovering Your Story: Black Genealogy, Presented by Nicole Eversley Bradwell

Researching POC through historical records can present challenges. The work of discovering these strong and sometimes uncovered voices can be challenging and very rewarding. This session will cover strategies and tips for researching your hard to find ancestors.

For the Culture: Student Org. Mixer, Presented by Center for IDEAS

End the month with your fellow students!  Take the opportunity to meet the other race/ethnicity focused organizations on campus at this mixer.  Organization leaders are invited to put together a small display for others to check out.  Cookies and warm beverages will be served.  To have your organization represented please contact Omega Hollies by Feb. 15th

Included in our Black History Month Lineup is a group of events hosted by the Caribbean Student Association (CSA) for this year’s Caribbean Week, February 18th through the 22nd! The following events listed below are a part of that series:  

 

Chatta Box Series: Caribbean Parents and Mental Health

Come join CSA for the debut of their new “Chatta Box” conversation series. This first forum is dedicated to discussing stigma surrounding mental health within Caribbean families and communities, and how to combat that.
