Some of today’s top creative and business professionals working in music and sound for the film and television industries will gather at Ithaca College on April 6, for a full-day interdisciplinary symposium designed for students, aspiring professionals, and faculty.

The keynote address of the Music and Sound for Picture Conference will be given by Oscar-winning producer Cathy Schulman. An outspoken advocate in the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements and president emerita of Women in Film, Schulman will focus on how producers and studios are combatting gender discrimination by building pathways, pipelines, and economic opportunities for females across the industry. Schulman was the producer of “Crash,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 2006 and also was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Song and for the BAFTA Award for Best Sound.

Other notable industry speakers include executives and representatives from Primary Wave Entertainment, Universal Music Group, Skywalker Sound, Warner Music Group, and more. Many independent industry professionals will also join the conference.

“Having so many top industry professionals here gives our students an opportunity to listen, learn and network with the best people in the industry,” said Phil Blackman, assistant professor in IC’s School of Business and one of the organizers of the conference.

Most of the sessions will feature industry experts in panel discussions; however, the Mixing for Film and Television track will include case study presentations in IC’s recording studio. Throughout the day, various film mixers and music editors will bring in actual multitrack audio files from films to demonstrate their creative processes.

The panels will include Foley and sound design artists, music licensing professionals, publishers, business and legal affairs professionals, directors, and music composers. Session topics include:

  • The Business of Music and Sound for Picture
  • View from the Director’s Chair – Why Music and Sound Design Matter
  • Sound Design, Foley, and Automated Dialogue Replacement for Film and Television
  • Music Composition for Film and Television
  • Music Supervision and Music Licensing for Film and Television
  • Film Music Mixing & Sound Editing
  • Professional Development for the Music and Screen Industries

There is no fee to attend the symposium. There will be a mid-day lunch as well as a reception at the end of the day where panelists and students will have the chance to mingle and enjoy lite fare.

The Music and Sound for Picture Conference is co-hosted by IC’s School of Business, Roy H. Park School of Communications and School of Music. It will take place on April 6, from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the James J. Whalen Center for Music.
