Zenon Wasyliw, professor Department of History, organized and chaired a panel that included two Ithaca College history alumni at the Association for the Study of Nationalities world convention held 2-4 May at Columbia University in New York City.

Zenon Wasyliw, professor Department of History, organized and chaired a panel that included two Ithaca College history alumni at the Association for the Study of Nationalities world convention held 2-4 May at Columbia University in New York City. The panel theme was “Political Violence, Memory and the Shaping of Identities in the Balkans and Central Asia.” Deyan Peykov ’05, a doctoral candidate in history at Florida International University, presented a paper on “Bulgarian National Heroes: People Fighting an Empire, People Forging Socialism.” David Kaminsky ’12, a doctoral student in history at Binghamton University, offered a paper on “Penal Landscapes: Memory and the Environment in the Soviet Gulag System.”

Wasyliw was also a book panel discussant of Rampart Nations: Bulwark Myths of East European Multiconfessional Societies in the Age of Nationalism,” and served as program moderator at a separate Historical Encounters conference, “Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the ‘Great Re-Unification of Ukrainian Lands.”
