This loss really hurts. Charles was one of my interviewers in a hotel room in NYC in 1983, when I had my first face-to-face contact with anyone from Ithaca College. And for years thereafter, when I was a department colleague and office neighbor of his in Muller, he was unfailingly supportive and encouraging, eager to talk (with great enthusiasm) about what we were teaching and how. He was one of the reasons I loved my career at the College, and I’m deeply grateful.

Charles was a chairperson along with me from about 1975 on
through the 1980s. I always thought he was a great guy to learn from.We both shared a love of woodworking and our conversations walking back from a meeting would quickly evolve from academic issues to our latest woodworking projects. He was a great professor and a great craftsman too.I was lucky to know him as a colleague and a friend. Harry McCue Charles Grace, Professor Emeritus of English, Passed Away Comment from

I had Professor Grace for a lit survey course my sophomore year at IC (1967-68).
I'll never forget one anecdote he told us. He was fishing on a lake in Germany with a German friend. The water was perfectly calm. Professor Grace noted that it was mirror smooth and began to meditate on how beautifully the sounds in that phrase fit the scene. At this point his German companion remarked, "Spiegel glatt." That phrase, in German, was identical to mirror smooth, but just didn't do the trick. Jim Mica TV-R '70 Office of Admission, Ret. |
