Participate in New York State's celebration of Stonewall 50 and World Pride 2019 this summer with a very special guided LGBTQ History Tour on Saturday June 22 at 3 pm, right here in Ithaca. Register here to be part of the fun!
Bars and public spaces have been sites of LGBTQ resistance and resilience for decades. But many of the people and places that make up our history’s shared past have been forgotten, erased, overlooked, or ignored. This LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning) local history tour is designed to preserve some of the rich stories and heritage of our Ithaca community. It's for anyone wanting to learn about our local LGBTQ history and culture.
Did you know Ithaca:
is the site of one of the 1st public declarations of the American bisexual movement
played a crucial role in marriage equality
was one of the 1st cities in the US to prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation
is where one of the 1st student-organized sit-ins for LGBTQ rights took place.
We'll gather at a downtown Ithaca location, and then be led on a guided walking tour with the tour's creators. We'll offer our own reflections as we proceed to select sites in downtown Ithaca pointing out local historic LGBTQ spots and happenings that played important roles in our local community and in our nation too. Please register here to reserve your spot for the tour.
We invite everyone that registers for our tour to start with us and decide the level of involvement in terms of time and energy that works best for them. We'll also provide some quick tips on how to use the Pocket Sights app where the full self-guided version of our tour is always available 24/7 for anyone to take on their own, and its features that can be customized by each user for an individualized experience.
Plan for an experience of about 75 minutes, that will take place on flat terrain along the sometimes uneven sidewalks and occasionally bustling street crossings of downtown Ithaca. Our final tour stop and destination will conveniently leave tour guests right at the center of the Ithaca Pride celebration.
Please bring water, a hat, sunscreen, and any other items that will make your walk more enjoyable. Please register here to reserve your spot for the tour.
Thank you to our cosponsors The History Center in Tompkins County and Ithaca Heritage, and to I Love NY for including this event along with the many taking place throughout the state in celebration of Stonewall 50 and World Pride 2019. We hope people will join us as we take to the streets to rediscover and continue to create our history.
Space is limited, please sign up here to reserve your spot for the tour. Registrants will receive information about the starting point of the tour, and will also be updated should bad weather cause any changes to our plan for the day.
Individuals with disabilities requiring accommodations should contact Luca Maurer at lmaurer@ithaca.edu or (607) 274-7394. We ask that requests for accommodations be made as soon as possible.
