Ithaca College

Three English majors presented their H&S Summer Scholar work at the Children's Literature Association's annual conference in Indianapolis June 13-15.  The theme of this year's conference was "Empathy and Activism."

Eliana Berger (Summer Scholar 2018) presented "Empathy for the Employed: The Lowell Offering as a Site of Agency and Self-advocacy for Factory Girls"

Andrea Yzaguirre (Summer Scholar 2018) presented "Empathy for the Beast: Sinbad the Sailor Promoting and Destroying Empathy throughout the Centuries"

Both presentations were based on archival work that the students did at the American Antiquarian Society.

Angelina Randazzo (Summer Scholar 2019) presented "'This is Me': The Importance of Visible Lesbian Role Models in Middle-Grade Literature."  This presentation represents groundwork that she did for this summer's project on LGBT+ children's texts.  She is working at the Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections at Cornell, accessing materials from the Human Sexuality Collection.

The IC students presented alongside professors, archivists and graduate students; they were the only undergraduates presenting at this International conference, and their presentations were a constant source of praise and wonder.
