Michael Smith (History/ENVS) co-authors chapter in Routledge Press collection on sustainable development.Contributed by Jonathan Ablard on 01/08/20 In collaboration with Susan Kinne and community members in Sabana Grande, Nicaragua, Smith co-wrote "Paths to Empowerment: A Case Study of Local Sustainability from Nicaragua" for Global Champions of Sustainable Development, (Routledge 2020). This volume offers case studies of how communities around the world are working to meet the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In their chapter, Smith and his collaborators focus on the work of Grupo Fénix and the women's cooperative Las Mujeres Solares de Totogalpa (the Solar Women of Totogalpa), emphasizing the ways that empowering women and achieving the SDGs often go hand in hand. Some of the research for this chapter was carried out with the support of a Fulbright grant in 2017. |
