A one-credit course is offered spring semester considering the transmediation of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale in novels, television, and other media. We will read The Handmaid's Tale and Atwood's new novel, The Testaments. This one-credit RLST course has no prerequisites. Come read Atwood's work, and consider how the story is impacted by its delivery in different modes of mediation. Think about the religious implications of world-building and fandom. Consider the critiques leveled against Atwood by women of color and others who see her use of American history as problematic. Analyze a few episodes of the TV series. Learn why some fans dress up as handmaids as a form of political protest. Think, read, write. The course requires weekly reflections and one six-page paper. Wednesdays 12-12:50. CRN 43202. Questions?
