Every 10 years, our government is required to conduct a census or count of the population of the country.  It is mandated by Article 1, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution and has been conducted every 10 years since 1790.

It counts every resident in the United States based on where they live and sleep most of the day – so for College Students at Ithaca College, you will be counted using your college address!

Your responses are protected by Federal Law and are only used to produced statistics.  The statistics are used to determine things like:

  • The number of seats each state has in the U.S. House of Representatives
  • Congressional and state legislative districts, school districts and voting precincts
  • How $675 billion dollars in federal funding are spent on infrastructure, programs and services
  • Informing government, business and community planning and decisions

For the first time, the Census will be able to be completed on-line.  The internet survey and paper questionnaires will be available in 12 non-English languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, Haitian Creole, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese) well.

More information is available at Census 2020
